Is Desert Safari Dubai worth it?

For most first-time visitors to Dubai, yes. It's the single experience that combines desert scenery, adventure (dune bashing), cultural elements (camp, camel ride), food (BBQ dinner), and entertainment (live shows) into one evening. No other Dubai activity packs that much variety into 6 hours.

That said, if you've done a lot of desert travel already or if you strongly dislike group activities, the standard shared safari might feel too commercial. In that case, Private Car gives you a more independent experience — same desert, but at your own pace.

Bottom line: If you're visiting Dubai for the first time and have one free evening, a desert safari is one of the best ways to spend it. Choose VIP or Private Car for the smoothest experience.

What to expect during the safari

The safari has three phases: the drive out, the dune bashing, and the camp.

Phase 1: Getting there (45–60 min). Your driver picks you up (if hotel pickup) and drives toward Lahbab desert. The drive is on normal roads — it's basically a highway drive out of the city.

Phase 2: Dune bashing + sunset (30–45 min). Once you're in the desert, the driver deflates the tires and starts driving over sand dunes. It's bouncy, fast, and fun — like a rollercoaster on sand. Midway, you stop at a high dune for sunset photos. This is the best moment of the trip — bring your phone charged.

Phase 3: Camp (2.5–3 hours). You arrive at a traditional-style desert camp. You can ride a camel, get henna done, try on traditional clothing for photos, sit in cushioned seating areas, and browse the camp. Then dinner is served (BBQ buffet), followed by live shows — belly dance, tanoura spinning, and fire performance. After the shows, you're driven back to the city.

What surprised most guests: The sunset stop is better than expected. The dune bashing is more intense than expected. The camp is more structured than expected — it's not a wild desert campout, it's an organized experience.

Is dune bashing safe?

Yes, with caveats. The 4×4 vehicles used are Toyota Land Cruisers certified for desert driving, and the drivers are licensed and experienced. Seatbelts are mandatory. Accidents are extremely rare because the terrain is soft sand, not hard ground — you're not going to crash into anything.

However, dune bashing involves sharp turns, steep descents, and sudden accelerations. It's uncomfortable for:

  • Pregnant women (should not do it)
  • People with back or neck problems
  • Very young infants (under 2)
  • Anyone prone to severe motion sickness

If any of these apply, you can skip dune bashing and go directly to camp. Just mention it when booking. Private Car makes this easiest because the driver adjusts for you specifically.

Practical tip: If you get car sick, sit in the front seat and look straight ahead. Avoid eating a big meal right before the drive.

What to wear

Light, comfortable clothes. You're sitting in a car, walking on sand, and sitting in a camp — nothing extreme. Most guests wear exactly what they'd wear for a casual evening out.

  • Shoes: Sneakers or sandals. Avoid heels or heavy boots. You'll walk on sand.
  • Clothes: T-shirt, light shirt, or blouse. Shorts or light pants. Breathable fabrics.
  • Winter (Nov–Feb): Bring a light jacket or hoodie. Desert evenings get cool — around 18–22°C.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Wear the lightest clothes you have. It's still hot in the evening.
  • What to avoid: Formal wear, heavy jewelry, anything you'd worry about getting sandy.
The honest answer: Whatever you'd wear to a casual outdoor barbecue at home is fine. It's not a luxury dinner — it's a desert camp.

When should you book?

As far in advance as you can — but same-day is often possible too. Here's the real breakdown:

  • Peak season (December–March): Book 2–3 days ahead. Private Car and VIP fill up fastest during this period.
  • Weekends (Fri–Sat in UAE): More demand. Book at least 1 day ahead.
  • Weekdays off-season: Same-day usually works. Just message on WhatsApp in the morning and you can often go that evening.

No advance payment is required. You book, we confirm, you pay on the day of the tour. If you need to cancel, just let us know in advance.

Best practice: Book 1–2 days before. It gives us time to confirm your ideal pickup time and vehicle. WhatsApp is the fastest channel.

Why Lahbab desert?

Lahbab (also called Al Lahbab or "red dunes") is about 50 km southeast of central Dubai. It's the most popular desert area for safari tours because of the red-colored sand and the tall, well-formed dunes. The dune bashing there is more dramatic than in desert areas closer to the city.

Some cheaper operators use desert areas closer to Dubai — the sand is lighter, the dunes are smaller, and the overall experience is less impressive. If you want the best dune scenery and the most dramatic sunset, Lahbab is the right area. All of our evening safaris go to Lahbab.

Quick answer: Lahbab = better dunes, better sand color, better sunset. Closer deserts = cheaper tours, less scenic.

Evening safari vs morning safari

The evening safari is the flagship product: pickup in the afternoon, dune bashing at sunset, then camp with dinner and shows. It's the full experience most tourists want.

The morning safari is shorter (3–4 hours), has more driving time in the dunes, includes sandboarding, but no dinner or shows. It ends before lunch. It's best for:

  • Repeat visitors who already did the evening version
  • Adventure-focused travelers who want more dune time
  • People who have dinner plans and want the desert in the morning
  • Summer visitors — mornings are cooler than evenings
If you can only do one: Do the evening safari. It's the more complete and memorable experience.
